5 tips for your visit to Goto Lake
When you leave the vibrant energy of Kralendijk behind and head north, Bonaire's landscape changes dramatically. The coastline gives way to rolling hills and a serene tranquility. Located in this rugged setting of Washington Slagbaai National Park lies Lake Goto: the largest saltwater lagoon on our island and a place where nature still plays the leading role.
The natural heart of Northern Bonaire
The Gotomeer (Goto Lake) is a beautiful protected nature reserve. As one of the most important habitats for the Caribbean flamingo, this sprawling salt pan offers a unique glimpse into the island's flora and fauna. The deep blue water, surrounded by cacti and rock formations, forms a sharp contrast with the pink colors of the flamingos that peacefully forage here. It is a location that invites you to step out of the car, feel the wind, and simply enjoy the silence.
1. Enjoy the panoramic view
For the best perspective on the lake, we advise you to stop at the official viewpoint on the east side. Here you will find benches where you can leisurely look out over the lagoon. On clear days, you will have an impressive panorama: not only will you see the flamingos in the water, but also the contours of the Brandaris, the highest mountain in Bonaire, proudly rising above the landscape. This is the place to absorb the grandeur of the north.
2. Observe the Caribbean flamingo
The Gotomeer is one of the best locations on the island to admire flamingos up close, provided you keep quiet. Especially in the first half of the year, they are present in large numbers. We recommend bringing binoculars so you can observe the unique behavior of these elegant birds without disturbing their natural habitat.
3. Take the Dos Pos walk
For those who like to explore Bonaire on foot, the Dos Pos walk is a wonderful choice. This challenging walk of about an hour starts at the well and windmill of Dos Pos (slightly further than the viewpoint of the Gotomeer), where you can also park. You follow the route using pink markers. The path begins with a short climb through wooded area and soon opens to a rugged landscape with rocks and impressive views over the surrounding hilltops. Along the path, countless cacti grow, giving the landscape a typical Bonairean appearance. Along the way, you will get views of the Gotomeer and are likely to see loras or cara caras soaring through the sky.
4. Choose the right time
The early morning is undoubtedly the best time to visit. The temperature is still pleasantly cool and the soft morning light creates a beautiful reflection on the mirror-smooth water. Ideal for photography enthusiasts. Moreover, nature is most active at this time, which considerably increases your chances of seeing special bird species.
5. Combine your visit with Rincon
The Gotomeer is on the ideal route towards the historic village of Rincon. We recommend driving to this oldest village in Bonaire after your stop at the lake. Here you can soak up the local culture and enjoy authentic hospitality, which completes your day trip through the north. For example, have lunch at Posada Para Mira, one of Eloïse Van der Valk's favorites.
Practical information
Accessibility: The Gotomeer is best reached by (rental) car. We recommend a vehicle with good ground clearance (such as a pickup or SUV) for optimal comfort on the roads in the north.
Facilities: There are benches at the viewpoint, but there are no shops or dining facilities directly at the lake. Therefore, bring enough drinking water.
Respect for nature: The lake is a protected area. Stay on the marked paths and do not leave any waste behind.
